OK, I'm Convinced
Even after all the chatter in the U.S. regarding the demise of the mainstream press (MSP) vis-a-vis blogs, I was unconvinced of the death of MSP - figuring it would just have to move over a bit and accomodate something else in its space.
But after seeing the PCIJ blog demolish the usefulness of the Philippine MSP in the breaking tapes crisis, I'm convinced. The MSP is one dead parrot.
Mr. Praline: Look, matey, I know a dead parrot when I see one, and I'm looking at one right now.Rest in Peace, MSP.
Owner: No no! 'E's pining!
Mr. Praline: 'E's not pinin'! 'E's passed on! This parrot is no more! He has ceased to be! 'E's expired and gone to meet 'is maker! 'E's a stiff! Bereft of life, 'e rests in peace! If you hadn't nailed 'im to the perch 'e'd be pushing up the daisies! 'Is metabolic processes are now 'istory! 'E's off the twig! 'E's kicked the bucket, 'e's shuffled off 'is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile!! THIS IS AN EX-PARROT!!

'Es pinin' for the fjords...
No, but don't consign it to the recycling heap of history yet, it's still got some fight in it. Even PCIJ relies in MSP, and depends on them for exposure and income. PCIJ and blogs are what are taking media further and keeping it from stagnating into just another source of rss feeds.
Interesting. But maybe PCIF better get a different revenue model because even Dr. Weinberger is beginning to think the MSP is "on the precipice."
